Countywide : Judges Pick County Grand Jury Panel

Thirty Ventura County residents were unanimously selected to the 1992-93 Grand Jury panel by the Superior Court judges, the jury commissioner said Thursday.

On July 1, the names of 19 panel members will be drawn by lot to serve on the Grand Jury, said the commissioner, Sheila Gonzalez. The remaining 11 panelists will be available to replace any grand juror unable to complete a one-year term.

The primary duty of a grand jury is to serve as a watchdog on county government. Each year, the panel examines the operations of county agencies and recommends changes. Members are paid $20 a day and meet several days a week, always in secret.

Information about the panelists’ age or occupations will not be available until the jury is selected, said Betty Kane, jury services manager.

Among the 30 panelists is one member from the present Grand Jury, Richard W. Cooper Sr. of Simi Valley. Two others, Margaret P. Shinn of Ventura and Arthur B. Schmaling of Thousand Oaks, were substitute panelists on this year’s Grand Jury.

From Supervisorial District 1 (west Ventura County), the nominees are Randal Best, Milene M. Koeberle, Robert Ross, Shinn, Virginia Weber and Timothy Woodward, all of Ventura.

The nominees from District 2 (southeast county) are Anita Goldfarb of Westlake Village; Richard Green, Edward Schlossman and Schmaling of Thousand Oaks; and Michael Snead and William Stewart Jr. of Port Hueneme.

From District 3 (north and central county), the nominees are Barbara Barker of Santa Paula; Charline Combs, Joseph Di Peri, Kenneth Hammond and Harlan Snyder of Camarillo, and June Marion Wolfe of Fillmore.

The nominees from District 4 (northeast county) are Cooper and Harold L. Fick of Simi Valley; Robert Crockford, Jill Gonzalez, Robert Walker and Irene Watts of Moorpark.

The nominees from district 5 (southwest county) are Robert Brown, William Lloyd, John Meserve, Grace Penko, Woodrow Shumate and Fumi Teshima of Oxnard.
