The American Telephone & Telegraph Co. and its unions said progress was made in contract talks Friday, and they extended the negotiations into the weekend.

Communications Workers of America President Morton Bahr had said he would send his negotiators home Friday if there was a stalemate, but a union official said progress was being made and the bargainers would remain at the table.

An AT&T; official said the talks had “resulted in some progress on remaining issues,” but he gave no details.

Job security, pay and pensions are chief negotiating issues, officials on both sides have said.

Without any progress, Bahr had vowed to break off the talks and launch “actions” against the company--but not a strike--over the weekend.
