SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Edwin Moses, unable to compete in a track meet at UC Irvine Sunday because of an ankle injury, is doubtful for the U.S. Olympic trials on June 19-28 in New Orleans.

The 36-year-old three-time Olympian, who is the world record-holder in the 400-meter hurdles, has been unable to qualify for the trials.

With a deadline of June 13, he has only one more opportunity--a meet in Indianapolis next weekend. The standard is 50.20 seconds.

Moses, who attended Sunday’s Elite Classic at Irvine, was expected to run.

“I had a standing invitation from (meet director) Danny Williams to come to this meet, but I’ve been nursing an injury--a pinched nerve in my (left) ankle,” said Moses, who won gold medals in the 1976 and 1984 Olympic Games and was third in 1988. “I didn’t communicate to him that I wasn’t going to be (running) here.”

He said he didn’t run because the injury has limited his training. He didn’t know whether he’d be able to attempt to meet the standard next weekend.

Moses said his current injury probably came about because of a calf injury in the same leg. He said his training was going well in April and May, before the injuries.

“I can’t be disappointed, winning four Olympic trials and being at the Olympics,” said Moses, who plans to race in Europe during the summer. “Track is not the only thing I do, but I did put in the full commitment for the trials.”

Bonnie Dasse, a 1988 Olympian in the women’s shotput, had a throw of 60 feet 1 3/4 inches to highlight Sunday’s competition. The mark was her best since 1988 and is the third best in the nation this year.

Dasse, who placed second at the 1988 Olympic trials to Ramona Pagel and 12th at the Seoul Olympics, has a lifetime best of 63-11 1/2 but threw only 56-2 3/4 last year.

“I’ve been really inconsistent in training this year--even with the warm-ups today, I was,” she said. “But it’s getting there. I told myself, ‘It’s an Olympic year.’ ”
