Gina Simanek Mountain, 23, who was allegedly beaten by Nebraska football player Scott Baldwin, testified Monday that she is struggling to relearn basic skills six months after the attack.

Mountain, who was married on Saturday, testified at Baldwin’s trial on two assault charges stemming from the Jan. 18 incident. Baldwin, 22, has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the charges of first-degree assault of Mountain and third-degree assault of Lincoln policeman Greg Sims, who tried to pull the 205-pound football player from the woman.

Paul Merritt, Lancaster County district judge who heard the case instead of a jury, listened to about 90 minutes of testimony and then took the case under advisement. He will announce his verdict on Wednesday. If Merritt agrees to acquit Baldwin, he will then hold a hearing to determine what type of treatment is appropriate.

Psychiatrists who have examined Baldwin concluded that he was insane at the time of the attacks, said Lancaster County Attorney Gary Lacey.

Defense attorneys have recommended that Baldwin continue his outpatient treatment with psychotherapy and medication.
