Amati Franchises: Amati, the Irvine-based U.S. luxury-car division of Mazda Motor of America, has signed 22 new dealership candidates for franchises to begin retailing the still-unseen cars when they hit the marketplace in 1994.

The new candidates--none in Orange County--bring the total number of potential Amati franchise holders to 41, including James Parkinson, owner of the Tustin Nissan dealership and so far Orange County’s only Amati candidate. (Dealers are candidates when they sign a letter of intent with Amati; they become dealers when the actual franchise agreement is signed, a process that can take months.)

Amati’s goal is to have 50 dealers in place when the cars arrive from Japan.
