Five Pacific nations will take part in a major exercise in the Pacific Ocean June 19 through Aug. 2, the Pentagon announced Tuesday.

Dubbed “Rimpac 92,” the exercise will bring together 45 ships, 200 aircraft and 20,000 military men and women from Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea and the United States, according to the announcement.

After port visits to San Diego and Pearl Harbor, the units will train off the coasts of Hawaii and southern California.

The maneuvers are designed “to enhance the tactical capabilities of participating units in major aspects of maritime operations at sea,” the statement said.

The exercise is the 13th in a series that has been conducted every other year since 1971. This year’s exercise will involve a wide variety of combat ships, support ships, land and carrier based aircraft, attack submarines and Marine Corps aviation units, the statement said.
