SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The San Diego County district attorney’s office filed a charge of attempted murder Tuesday against a 26-year-old transient sought in the shooting of a sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop in Lemon Grove.

A no-bail arrest warrant was also issued for James Michael Bright, who also uses the last name Roberts, Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Victoria Reden said. The attempted-murder charge includes the special allegation of use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

Deputy Paul E. Kain, 34, was shot three times in the lower body Saturday morning after he pulled a car over for a broken light in the 8500 block of Palm Street. As he walked to the car, the driver opened fire with a handgun, officials said.

Kain was in serious condition Tuesday at UC San Diego Medical Center.

The car Kain had pulled over was reported stolen later Saturday morning and was recovered Saturday night in El Cajon, authorities said.

Bright is described as white, about 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, with shoulder-length wavy brown hair and a shaggy goatee. He has the word Wizzard tattooed on his right arm and Lisa on his left arm, Reden said.

Bright, believed to be armed and extremely dangerous, has been known to drive a 1981 gray or tan Ford pickup, California license number 2X50709. He has no permanent address but frequents the El Cajon, Spring Valley, Lemon Grove and South Bay areas, Reden said.

Authorities said anyone with information that might lead to the accused should call 692-5600 or 565-5200.
