Namibia’s Frankie Fredericks outran America’s Michael Johnson and Britain’s Linford Christie at the wire to win the 200 meters in 20.23 seconds at the Golden Gala IAAF Grand Prix track meet in Rome. Johnson, rated first in the world, and Christie were timed in 20.25.

Sergei Bubka of the Commonwealth of Independent States missed his world record of 20 feet, 1/4 inch in the pole vault, but won easily at 19-2 1/2. Bubka’s younger brother, Vassily, finished second at 18-6 1/2. World record-holder Javier Sotomayor of Cuba won the high jump at 7-7, easily defeating Patrik Sjoberg of Sweden at 7-4 1/2.
