David K. Morgan, a master of fine arts candidate at Cal State Fullerton, won first place in the Arts and Design category of the sixth annual California State University Student Research Competition with a series of ceramic and mixed-media sculptures called “Wildlife in Art: Environmental Conflicts.” One of Morgan’s pieces, “Exxon’s Ark,” is a 12-foot-long terra cotta relief sculpture of the Exxon Valdez oil tanker; images of the wildlife killed by the ship’s oil spill in 1989 are embossed on the hull. The piece has become part of the school’s permanent art collection and is on view in the lobby of the Titan Pavilion on campus. Morgan, a Pomona resident, is a graduate of Humboldt State University in Arcata where he majored in wildlife management. The competition, sponsored by Cal State University and the CSU Foundation, recognizes outstanding research and scholarly accomplishments by students at the 20 CSU campuses. Graduate and undergraduate winners were selected in each of 10 categories from a pool of 125 students--winners in their respective campus competitions--by a panel of jurors representing private industry and institutions of higher education.
