Digital Equipment Buys Software Distributor: Digital Equipment Corp. announced that it has acquired the 800-Software Co. of Point Richmond, Calif., a distributor of personal computer programs and equipment. Financial terms were not disclosed. Digital said the acquisition marks its entry into the growing desktop market. The company had announced in April that it was negotiating to purchase the firm. Digital said 800-Software will become a wholly owned subsidiary with its current management and will continue its focus on non-Digital software and equipment. The 800-Software outlet has 200 employees at its headquarters and has regional sales offices in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and Washington. It distributes Borland, Intel, Lotus, Microsoft, Novell and WordPerfect products.
