Share

Orange County’s first retirement assistance office for federal employees will open today at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.

It is intended to help former federal employees with the paperwork needed to file workers’ compensation claims with the government.

The office will be open on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon. It is in Building 304, at the civilian personnel department. Those needing help can enter the base through the main gate on Trabuco Road.

“We had a lot of walk-ins come to us needing assistance,” said Carole Blackmer, civilian employee relations chief at the base.

“Dealing with the paperwork can be complicated, and the retirees need someone to call Washington for them sometimes.”

The new Orange County program will join 17 others throughout the Southland, Blackmer said. There are more than 80 such assistance centers across the United States.

In addition to helping federal retirees collect their benefits, the offices work with surviving spouses in filing life insurance and annuity claims.

The centers are staffed with volunteers belonging to the National Assn. of Retired Federal Employees.
