A bus carrying kindergarten pupils got caught in cross-fire between two gangs Wednesday and a boy was shot in the head, authorities said.

Cesar Sandoval, 6, was in critical condition at Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was taken after the shooting in the city’s Hill Section, about two miles from the Yale University campus.

“Gunfire and drugs. Gunfire and drugs. That’s all that goes on around here,” said Tom Frenco, an employee of Tony’s Used Appliances in the high-crime neighborhood.

“If a kid can’t be safe at this tender age going to school, then when can he be safe?” said James Smith as he arrived at Vincent Mauro School to pick up his granddaughter.

One suspect was in custody and police were seeking two others, Mayor John Daniels told reporters gathered at the hospital. Police said the shooting was drug-related.

The bus left the school with 12 kindergartners aboard, Daniels said.
