Rome Mayor Quits as Probe Is Reported
Mayor Franco Carraro resigned Wednesday, calling for a shake-up at the top levels of Rome’s city government.
Later in the day, Italian news agencies reported that Carraro was questioned by a prosecutor investigating a financial scandal. But Carraro, who has not been charged, said the investigation had nothing to do with his resignation.
Carraro, a Socialist, was elected mayor by the City Council in December, 1989. He previously was president of the Italian Olympic Committee.
Italian news agencies reported that Carraro was questioned by a Rome prosecutor investigating the costs of modernizing the capital’s soccer stadium for the 1990 World Cup games.
Italian magistrates have been investigating irregularities in the construction projects.
