U.S. OLYMPIC TRIALS

Michael Lofton won his second consecutive NCAA Division I men’s sabre title and Peter Westbrook made an Olympic team for a fifth time in the U.S. Fencing National Championships at Dolton, Ill.

The U.S. Olympic sabre team is expected to consist of Westbrook, 40, of New York, Lofton of New York, Steve Mormando of Dover, N.J., Robert Cottingham of Orange, N.J., and John Friedberg of New York. Lofton, Mormando and Cottingham will compete in the individual sabre in the Olympics at Barcelona.

Lofton, 29, beat Dimitriy Gai of San Diego, 6-4, 5-2, in the final. Westbrook, a bronze medalist in the 1984 Olympics, beat Don Anthony, 5-3, 5-3, for third place.

Bobby Hurley of Duke and Jamal Mashburn of Kentucky are among eight college players named by USA Basketball to help the U.S. team prepare for Olympics.

The eight will form a development team that will scrimmage against the Olympians during their June 22-26 training at the University of California at San Diego.

Others on the development team are Anfernee Hardaway of Memphis State, Grant Hill of Duke, Allan Houston of Tennessee, Eric Montross of North Carolina, Rodney Rogers of Wake Forest and Chris Webber of Michigan.

USC Coach George Raveling will coach the development team, and will be assisted by Kansas Coach Roy Williams.
