Butch Reynolds, the world 400-meter record-holder who has been barred from competing internationally, was timed in 44.67 in the event Wednesday in a track and field meet in Holmdel, N.J.
Reynolds is hoping to get a court order that would allow him to compete in the U.S. Olympic trials June 19-28 in New Orleans. He is currently under suspension for two years by the International Amateur Athletic Federation after testing positive for steroids. He has exhausted his appeals within the IAAF, and his suspension doesn’t expire until three days after the Summer Olympics in Barcelona end on Aug. 9.
The IAAF has said that any athletes who compete against Reynolds in the interim would be risking their eligibility for the Summer Olympics.
More than 20 runners had entered the 400, but all but three refused to run against Reynolds.
