Syrian Jews

For those who are confused about the quandary of the Jewish population in Syria (“Syrian Regime Presents Jews With Crisis: Leave or Stay?” May 26), perhaps I can shed some light on this issue since I am a Syrian Jew “Nisei.” It is a confusing issue, so I’d like to try to simplify it.

Here’s the dilemma as I see it: On one hand life is good in Syria, according to the local Jewish leaders, and all that hullabaloo about “mistreatment” of Syrian Jews is only propaganda by Jewish organizations to whip up “international hostility to the Syrian regime.” On the other hand, it can be a little uncomfortable for the Syrian Jews especially on such an occasion as when they are seated quietly in a theater watching a play calling for the liberation of Palestine and suddenly members of the audience begin shouting “kill the Jews, kill the Jews.”

Now let me ask you: Why would a Jew want to leave such a nice place?
