MUST SAY NO: The recession has claimed another victim. . . . UC Irvine’s bid to host one of the three presidential debates this fall was withdrawn when campus officials decided they couldn’t raise $500,000 in private funds to stage the nationally televised event. “This is just a difficult time to be raising money for that kind of event,” says UCI spokeswoman Karen Newell Young. UCI had courted the presidential debate commission since late summer.
