From a Times Staff Writer

Physicians evaluating state Sen. Bill Greene (D-Los Angeles) said Thursday that he was in serious condition, but officials at Mercy General Hospital declined to comment on the nature of the illness that caused Greene to be taken by ambulance Wednesday from the Capitol.

However, Sen. Diane Watson (D-Los Angeles) said she had been told by Greene’s office that he had suffered a stroke. Greene, 60, did not seek reelection and planned to leave office at the end of the year.
