Umpires Not Why Teams Can Feel Safe at Home
In his June 6 letter, George W. Feinstein of Altadena disagrees with Vin Scully’s assertion that major league umpires “can’t be intimidated by players or fans.” He cites most baseball teams’ better home than road records as evidence that umpires cave in to fans’ desires.
Funny, I always thought getting the last at-bat was the reason for baseball’s slight (when compared to football or basketball) home-field advantage. There’s also knowing how to play the caroms and tailoring one’s swing to fit one’s home field.
The next time Mr. Feinstein has a beef with the umpires, he should go to a game and heckle them--and be ignored with the rest of us.
