Judge Karlin’s Reelection

Share

I must express my great disappointment in the reelection of Judge Karlin. My disappointment and anger extend to my people in the black community who did not take the time and effort to vote to ensure this unqualified individual did not continue to hand down decisions that are unfair and unjust. I ask what does it take for this community to get motivated?

As a new resident of Los Angeles County, I watched in horror and disbelief when Judge Karlin sentenced the Korean grocer to five years’ probation for the killing of Latasha Harlins. In the months that followed I have listened to Judge Karlin express her views and what I hear are code words for the majority in power (whites), and the mob/criminals (blacks). Never have I heard her express sympathy for the family of Latasha Harlins for the loss they experienced.

Judge Karlin should realize her decision is just as much an igniter of the Los Angeles riots as the acquittal of the four Los Angeles police officers. No remorse, no understanding, no compassion--those words describe Judge Karlin.

In closing I would like Judge Karlin and all those who voted for her to put themselves in the place of Latasha Harlins’ family and ask yourself is this justice? Is this what a black life of a young teen-ager is worth, five months’ probation? I say a black life is worth the same as a white life and you people out there better realize that fact!
