An Oak View man was arrested Sunday after reportedly trying to steal saddles from a stable.

A foreman for the Rancho Royale Horse Stables in Ojai reported the burglary at 10:30 p.m. Saturday after he chased a suspect out of a open tack room.

Deputies later found a cache of stolen saddles below Creek Road and waited for the thief to return.

Jose Lopez Reyes, 21, was arrested by Ventura County sheriff’s deputies on suspicion of burglary after he was surprised by deputies staked out near the saddles.

Reyes, who tried to flee in his truck, was jailed on $20,000 bail after his arrest, authorities said.

Rancho Royale Horse Stables is one of the biggest boarding stables in the Ojai Valley.

Saddles can fetch from $100 to $400 on the market, Markley said.
