Clean Fuels

Share

On our recent vacation trip to visit friends in Brazil, we were driven along the beautiful beaches for days, and then our hosts drove their new Chevrolet back to Sao Paulo. When we stopped to fill the fuel tank, what a shock! They called the fuel “alcohol.”

We were near the Chevrolet dealer where the car had been purchased, so at our request we paused to look at the new General Motors cars available in Brazil. Every one of the eight models comes equipped with either a gasoline or an alcohol engine. The buyer gets to choose between a polluting engine or a clean engine!

Why, why, why does GM give Brazilians this choice, but we don’t have it? Why is this matter not in President Bush’s speeches? Why was this not on the agenda for the Earth Summit in Rio?
