Sierra Surprised by Late-Season Snow
Snow fell in a wide area of the Sierra Nevada Monday as a late-season storm left up to four inches on the ground and produced a snow advisory for areas higher than 7,000 feet.
Snow was accumulating on U.S. 50 west of Echo Summit and on Interstate 80 over Donner Summit, Caltrans reported. Chains or snow tires were required over Carson Pass on California 88 south of Lake Tahoe.
The snow advisory was in effect until noon Monday in the Lake Tahoe area and through Monday in the central Sierra above 7,000 feet, where up to six more inches of snow was expected.
Ron Olson, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Reno, said three to four inches were reported at higher elevations in the Tahoe Basin on Sunday.
“I think this caught people by surprise since summer is so close,” he said. Summer begins next Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Coast Guard reported two waterspouts Sunday on Lake Tahoe.
