OJAI : Study of Golf Club Water Use Sought

Share

Members of a local advisory council have offered the first negative comments on the environmental report for a private golf course proposed for an area east of Ojai, officials said.

The Ventura River Valley Municipal Advisory Council has demanded further research be done on water usage before the report for the proposed Farmont Golf Club is considered complete.

The report calculated how much water has historically been used on the property, and then compared it solely with the water that will be used on 200 acres of the golf course, council executive secretary Steve Offerman said.

This ignores the potential for irrigation of the entire 2,000-acre parcel, Offerman said, which could lead to an increase in water consumption.

Farmont officials offered to donate development rights to about 1,800 acres of the property to the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy, and insisted that the unused land will never be irrigated.
