DRIVING : Vacation Safety Behind the Wheel

Neglect of car maintenance is a prime cause of highway accidents and deaths. The Car Care Council says 5% of cars inspected after accidents have safety defects such as faulty brakes, defective steering, or worn tires. Brake failure is the leading cause of traffic accidents attributed to a mechanical defect.

If you’re going on a driving vacation this year, take a few minutes to build safety into the plans. Consult the owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations and the car’s specific requirements.

Mature Outlook magazine offers this pre-trip checklist:

* Vision. Top off the windshield-washer fluid; wipe off headlights; replace windshield wiper blades at least once a year.

* Lights. Check turn signals, headlights, brake and hazard lights.

* Brakes. Check brake pad linings, shoes and fluid level; look for leaks.

* Transmission. Change fluid and filter as recommended; have universal joints inspected; when planning to tow a trailer, check hitch and install auxiliary cooler.

* Engine tune. Replace air, PCV, and fuel filters; inspect belts and hoses.

* Air conditioner. Check refrigerant level; inspect belts.

* Lubrication. Change oil and filter; grease fittings.

* Electric system. Check connections for corrosion; test battery, fuses.

* Tires. Check tread condition and inflation; realign and balance wheels, if necessary.

* Safety kit. Pack flares, flashlight (check batteries), replacement fuses, rainwear, and blankets.
