Long Beach : 40,000 Signatures Submitted to Put Term Limits on Ballot

A local attorney who has lived in the city 20 years submitted 40,000 signatures to the city clerk Wednesday to put a term-limitation referendum on the November ballot.

The measure, spearheaded by Dennis Carroll, would limit council members and the mayor to two four-year terms. A politician could serve two terms as a council member and two terms as mayor, but could only win a seat as a write-in candidate once the term limits had been met.

“It’s very difficult and very expensive to unseat an incumbent,” said Carroll, who organized about 20 volunteers and hired a petition-management company to help him gather the names. “Term limits will save the taxpayers a lot of money, in addition to keeping the legislators’ eye on the ball. Instead of worrying about their reelections all the time, they can worry about the city’s business.”

The petition needed 23,866 signatures, or 15% of the registered voters, to be placed on the ballot.
