Teen-agers who are too old to go to camp--but too young for a paid job--might consider volunteer work this summer.
The book “150 Ways Teens Can Make a Difference,” by Marian Salzman and Teresa Reisgies (Peterson’s Guides, $7.95 soft-cover), is designed both as a source of ideas and as a guide to volunteer employment.
Among the book’s suggestions: work at a local recycling center, park, zoo or animal shelter; volunteer at a children’s hospital or a rehabilitation center; coach a basketball team or teach a swimming class.
The book includes profiles of teens who have successfully matched volunteer activities with their personalities and interests. There is also a state-by-state listing of nonprofit organizations that encourage teen volunteerism.
