West Hollywood : Easing the 310 Headache

City officials and Pacific Bell are working to ease headaches caused when the 310 area code split the city in two.

City Councilwoman Abbe Land said talks are under way to address concerns that residents in the 213 area code, who in non-emergencies must dial 1 plus 310 to reach the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department’s West Hollywood station, might end up calling 911 and taxing the emergency system.

The 310 area code, which went into effect May 16, includes the half of the city west of La Cienega Boulevard. The eastern half is in the 213 area code.

Pacific Bell has agreed that directory-assistance operators will have access to all city phone listings, no matter which area code is called, Land said. And residents will not be charged to change the city on their listings from Los Angeles to West Hollywood.

The company also assured city residents in the 213 area code that they will not be charged the Los Angeles utility tax. West Hollywood has no utility tax.
