ICE-T AND SISTER SOULJAH : Flores’ Council Action

Share

City Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores should be commended by all rational citizens for her opposition to hatemongering lyrics as expressed by rapper Ice-T’s song “Cop Killer,” which openly gloats about the prospect of killing police officers (“Rap Song Protest Heats Up,” June 13).

This type of sick incitement is echoed in rapper Sister Souljah’s interview with the Washington Post in which she spoke from the mind-set of a gang member in saying, “If black people kill black people every day, why not have a week and kill white people?”

Few believe that such rantings represent the majority sentiment of the black community, but they can have a dangerously destructive effect on immature minds and in no way can contribute to the healing process now being sought by so many. Encouragement to murder is a flagrant abuse of any right to free artistic expression.
