FULLERTON : School Trustees OK Preliminary Budget

Share

The Fullerton Joint Union High School District Board of Trustees unanimously passed a preliminary budget this week that calls for no major cutbacks for the 1992-93 fiscal year.

The $60-million budget passed with little controversy, but school district officials said there could be changes when they consider a revised budget later this summer, after state funding allocations become clear.

The budget passed Tuesday night by the board assumes a steady source of funding from the state, a prospect that is looking increasingly unlikely as the state struggles to close an $11-billion deficit in its own budget.

“‘This budget is subject to very major change once the state approves a budget,” said Robert A. Singer, the board’s president. “Our intent is not to create any unnecessary impacts until we know we have a clearer vision of what the Legislature will do.”

District Supt. J. Kenneth Jones said it is possible that the district will lose up to $3 million in funding from the state for the next fiscal year.

“‘I hope the folks up there in Sacramento realize the priority of education and take steps to protect it,” Jones said. “But I do think something will be cut.”
