PEST PATROL: The county’s Department of Agriculture is on the prowl for pesky little critters coming here illegally, and its inspectors are mounting some impressive numbers. After years of annually rejecting about 100 insect-ridden shipments of goods brought into the county, the figure jumped to over 1,000 last year. . . . Says the department’s John Ellis: “We’re getting more high-risk shipments--like cut flowers, plants. Competition makes it cheaper now to grow in tropical places like Florida and ship here.”
