Baldwin Park : Recreation Manager Backed
Nearly 200 people, from former gang members to senior citizens to street ministers, attended the City Council meeting Wednesday to protest the potential layoff of the city’s recreation manager because of budget cuts.
City Manager Donald Penman told the council that six positions, including that of recreation manager Gary Rose, may have to go if state legislators approve cuts that would mean $2.7 million less for the city’s $12.2-million budget.
Dozens of speakers, some in tears, praised Rose for his 25 years of work with children, senior citizens and the minorities. The council will wait until the state budget is finalized before scheduling a vote on the city’s 1992-93 budget.
