IBM Software Gets Boost: The computer giant’s struggling OS-2 operating system software has received a boost with a major software company’s commitment to rework seven of its programs for use with OS-2. Computer Associates International Inc. said it will rewrite the programs because of demand from its customers and its belief that OS-2 will take off. Operating system software allows computers to perform such basic functions as storing and retrieving data. OS-2 competes with a highly popular Microsoft Corp. program called Windows. International Business Machines Corp. released an improved version of OS-2 in April, but it has been losing the sales battle to a new version of Windows released about the same time.
