Countywide : Land Purchases Approved for Road Widening

Share

The Ventura County Board of Supervisors approved Tuesday the immediate purchase of 32 roadside properties so a 2.3-mile stretch of busy Santa Rosa Road can be widened and improved.

The board also awarded a $2.6-million contract to Nye & Nelson Inc. of Ventura to widen the two-lane road, pave its shoulders and install left-turn lanes.

The section to be reconstructed is between Gerry Road and Penelope Place east of Camarillo.

The board agreed to spend $931,543 to acquire the 32 slivers of property--and go to court to take the property for public use if the owners will not sell.

Four owners have agreed to sell and 15 are close to an agreement, said Paul W. Ruffin, a Public Works Agency manager. No residents spoke at Tuesday’s meeting.

But Ruffin said the major complaint about the project has been that it will result in more traffic and cars that travel at greater speeds.

He said that the road is intended as a major thoroughfare and that the improvements are needed for safety.
