SANTA CLARITA : $10-Million Road Contract Awarded
Los Angeles County supervisors awarded a major Santa Clarita road construction contract to the second-lowest bidder Tuesday because the company with the lowest bid did not meet state affirmative action goals.
C. A. Rasmussen Inc. of Simi Valley received the $10.2-million contract to build a new road and bridge along Whites Canyon Road. The company reported a 17.2% participation of minority businesses, which is higher than the state’s 15% goal.
An Arcadia firm, PKB Construction Inc., had bid slightly less, but had only 8.9% minority business participation, according to county Public Works Department officials.
The state requires affirmative action goals to be adhered to if it provides any funding for a project. In the Whites Canyon Road project, the county is eligible for about $3.4 million in state funding.
