Claremont : Basketball Hoops OKd

Basketball players scored a victory Tuesday when the City Council voted to allow free-standing basketball hoops in front yards.

The amended city code provision allows basketball hoops, backboards and poles to stand in front and street-side yards, but they must be at least 10 feet from front and street-side property lines, and two feet from other property lines.

Garage-mounted hoops were already allowed.

Although supporters cheered the passage, opponents said they were concerned about increased property damage from errant balls.

“As to legislating for flowers,” Councilman Nick Presecan said, “we’re not in that business.”
