SANTA CLARITA : Council Rejects Housing Tract
Invoking its new hillside and ridgeline preservation ordinance, the city of Santa Clarita has rejected a 45-house project in the Saugus area of the city.
The project proposed by KMR Construction Inc. would have required lowering two significant ridgelines on a 31.8-acre site southeast of Santa Clarita Road and La Rochelle Drive.
The City Council late Tuesday voted unanimously to uphold the Planning Commission’s rejection of the project after hearing testimony from city planners and residents, who said the project would have required grading behind 75 existing houses.
The hillside and ridgeline preservation ordinance that the council adopted earlier this year sets strict guidelines for development on slopes.
David Breier, a representative of KMR Construction, said the firm may resubmit a proposal to build 23 houses, 22 fewer than originally proposed. Breier had asked the council to waive about $15,000 in permit fees for the revised project, but the council refused his request.
