Sabonis Scores 22 Points to Lead Lithuania Past Hungary, 106-71

Arvidas Sabonis scored 22 points despite sitting out most of the second half as Lithuania trounced Hungary, 106-71, Wednesday in the European Olympic basketball qualifying tournament.

Sabonis, a former NBA draft pick of the Atlanta Hawks and Portland Trail Blazers, made all six of his shots, including a three-pointer. The former Soviet republic held Hungary to one field goal in the first 7:45 and remained tied with the Commonwealth of Independent States atop Group D at 3-0.

In other games, the CIS beat Britain, 109-73, and Estonia got 22 points from Ravno Pehka in a 106-74 rout of the Netherlands.

The top two teams from each group advance to the final round at Zaragoza, with four teams earning berths in the Olympics at Barcelona.

Germany beat Portugal, 87-52, to remain atop Group C at Murcia. Detlef Schrempf of the Indiana Pacers scored 15 points for Germany, which needs one more win to clinch a berth in the final round.

Croatia remained close behind as Drazen Petrovic and Arijan Komazec each scored 25 points in a 124-51 rout of Iceland.

In Group A at Bilbao, Slovenia remained undefeated with a 101-53 victory over Ireland as Boris Goren scored 21 points, and Sweden got 24 points from Torbjorn Gehrke in a 77-73 defeat of Bulgaria.

In Group B at Granada, Albania withstood a 34-point performance by Igor Gojanovic of Switzerland in an 85-84 victory and Israel beat Latvia, 79-69, as Doron Gamchi scored 33 points.
