A Dynamic Duo at City Hall

Share

The third event in this season’s City Hall Concert Series, 8 p.m. Saturday, is a family affair. The Kent/Shulman Duo consists of violinist Peter Kent and harpist Amy Shulman, who are bound in music and marriage.

The couple met while working in the pit orchestra for the musical “Evita” in Los Angeles. They resolved to form a duo, despite the relative lack of repertoire for their particular instrumental pairing. They’ve turned obscurity into an asset, commissioning new works for violin and harp and transcribing other works. At present, theirs is the only such touring duo in the United States.

The Kent/Shulman Duo will bring a wide range of music to their City Hall performance, from baroque music to contemporary chamber music. Included in the program will be Saint-Seans’ “Fantasie,” a Bach “Adagio-Allegro,” Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “The Lark Ascending” and David Leisner’s “Dances in the Madhouse.”

Composer John Biggs will moderate a pre-concert discussion with the musicians at 7 p.m. Ventura City Hall is at 501 Poli St., downtown. Tickets are $11 for Ventura Arts Council members and $12 for non-members. Call 652-2820.
