NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Biden Seeks Change in Court Selections

Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. (D-Del.), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, demanded a greater role for Senate Democrats in selecting Supreme Court nominees and vowed to oppose President Bush’s next choice if he or she does not represent a “middle ground” philosophy. Biden, speaking on the Senate floor, also said that all future court nominees will be questioned privately under oath by committee members to clear up any allegations turned up by investigators.
