CIS, Heading Into Game Against Lithuania, Upset by Netherlands

Okke te Velde scored seven of his 30 points in overtime to lead the Netherlands to a 103-96 upset of the Commonwealth of Independent States Thursday night in the European Olympic qualifying basketball tournament.

The loss was the first ever for the former Soviet Union against the Netherlands.

The CIS next faces Lithuania, the first game between the teams since the Soviets annexed the Baltic republic 53 years ago.

The CIS and Lithuania have qualified for the final round along with Slovenia and Germany. Eight teams will advance to the final round, to be held June 29 to July 5 at Zaragoza, Spain, with the top four advancing to the Olympics at Barcelona.

Dusan Hauptman scored 17 points to lead Slovenia to an 82-79 victory over Turkey, allowing the former Yugoslav republic to remain atop Group A at Bilbao, Spain, with a 4-0 record. In other games, Sweden got 17 points from Henrik Evers in a 92-56 victory over Ireland, and Czechoslovakia beat Bulgaria, 66-63.

Czechoslovakia must beat Slovenia tonight if it is to advance. Turkey is still alive.
