Holland Beats U.S. in Volleyball

Despite the offensive effort of Bryan Ivie and Bob Samuelson, the U.S. men’s volleyball team dropped its second match in a row to Holland in the World League playoffs in Rotterdam. The Dutch defeated the Americans, 15-10, 15-17, 5-12, 17-15 Sunday.

Middle blockers Ivie (25 kills, four blocks) and Samuelson (17 kills and a team-high five blocks) paced the United States, who was playing without two-time Olympian Steve Timmons. Carlos Briceno, filling in for Timmons, recorded 21 kills. Teammate Bob Ctvrtlik added 18.

The U.S. meets Brazil Friday in the San Diego Sports Arena at 7 p.m. Through Sunday, the Americans (3-3) are in fourth in the playoffs, behind Italy (6-0), Cuba (3-2) and Holland (3-3). The top four teams advance to the semifinals beginning Sept. 4 in Genoa, Italy.

GOLF

Bonita’s Elizabeth Bowman lost in the semifinals of match play at the 16th U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship in Sacramento.

Bowman, a Bonita Vista graduate, lost to Amy Fruhwirth of Phoenix, 4 and 3 on the 5,875-yard, par-71 Haggin Oaks Golf Course. Fruhwirth defeated Sara Evens 3 and 1 in the final.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

La Mesa’s Karolyn Kirby and Carlsbad’s Angela Rock, leading money winners on the Women’s Professional Volleyball Assn. tour, tied for ninth in the $40,000 Coors Light Cape Cod Open in West Dennis, Mass., their worst finish in 28 events they’ve played together over 1 1/2 seasons.

Linda Carrillo and Liz Masakayan won their fourth stop of the season when they defeated Janice Harrer of Honolulu and Nancy Reno of Carlsbad, 16-14 in the championship. Harrer and Reno split $7,000 for their second-place finish.

Kirby, a Brookline, Mass., native, and Rock are still atop the tour with 300 points and $42,600 each. San Diego-based Gail Castro and Lori Kotas picked up $1,600 and tied for seventh.
