FileNet Corp., a maker of document processing systems, is looking for 60,000 square feet of space near its headquarters in Costa Mesa as it prepares to expand its work force of 450.

Ted Smith, chief executive, said the company has outgrown its 170,000-square-foot headquarters at Scenic Avenue and Harbor Boulevard. He said the added space would position the company to add to all of its departments.

“We haven’t firmed up our plan for the next calendar year,” Smith said. “But we’ll grow locally.”

The reason: Smith says his decade-old dream of using computers to reduce paperwork in corporate offices is starting to gain acceptance.

As evidence, he cites last week’s trade show by the Assn. for Information and Image Management. The gathering drew more than 350 vendors and 30,000 people to the Anaheim Convention Center.

The national accounting firm Deloitte & Touche estimates that the industry’s worldwide revenue last year was $7.1 billion, a 58% increase from 1990.
