Berlin’s beleaguered effort to serve as host city for the 2000 Summer Olympics was crippled when a television news show exposed what it said were plans to bribe international Olympic officials.

The ARD news program “Monitor” said it had obtained documents saying that the Berlin Olympic Society’s marketing arm had made an assessment of which members of the International Olympic Committee could be bribed, based on information acquired by a private investigator about the drinking, drug and sex habits of IOC members, and what they thought of the Nazi era.
