James (Echo) Edmonson, 49, of Los Angeles, who won the ninth stage Sunday and was in fourth place overall, dropped out of the competition Tuesday.

Tim Parsel has been named basketball coach at Estancia High, Principal Frank Infusino said.

Parsel replaces Tim O’Brien, who resigned to take the basketball coaching position at Orange Coast College.

Parsel, a math and science teacher at Newport Harbor since 1985, will be a walk-on coach at Estancia. He has coached Newport Harbor’s junior varsity basketball and varsity badminton teams, as well as several other sports. He coached Costa Mesa’s varsity basketball team from 1979-84 and Newport Harbor’s varsity in 1985.

Estancia was 25-8 last season and reached the section and regional finals.
