Several area cyclists competed in the U.S. Olympic road and track trials and national championships last month, but none made the 1992 Olympic teams.

The road trials were held in Altoona, Pa., June 11-21, and the track trials were held in Blaine, Minn., at the National Sports Center velodrome, June 23-28. National championships also were at stake at both venues.

In the track trials, Amanda Henry of Thousand Oaks won the national championship in the women’s kilometer time trial final June 24, timing 1 minute 12.63 seconds. There is not a women’s kilometer race in the Olympics.

Henry, who attended Westlake High and Moorpark College, won the 1,000 meters in the 1991 U.S. Olympic Festival in a track-record 1:14.923.

In the men’s kilometer time trial, Chris Bevan of Woodland Hills finished 15th, timing 1:10.41. Erin Hartwell of Colorado Springs won the national championship and qualified for the Olympic team in 1:06.51.

Bevan and teammate John Harvey of Encino placed second in the Madison national team championship June 29 with 52 points, five points behind winners Pat Warner of Kokomo, Ind., and Claude Gerard of Orlando, Fla.

Scott Skellenger of Thousand Oaks rode in a heat of the exhibition Keirin, June 23-24. The race is paced by a motorcycle until the final lap, when the motorcycle exits the track and racers sprint to the finish. Skellenger failed to advance to the final.

Haldane Morris of Sherman Oaks finished 31st in the men’s 4,000-meter pursuit, timing 5:02.99 on June 24. Carl Sundquist of Pembroke Pines, Fla., won in 4:41.56.

In Altoona, Greg McNeil of Ojai missed making the Olympic team by one bike length in the 123-mile men’s Olympic trial race June 20. McNeil finished second behind Timothy Peddie of Boulder, Colo., who timed 5 hours 12 minutes 53 seconds.

The Warner Velo men’s team--Mike Nicolaides and Scot Gustafson of Newhall, Gary Hanson of Woodland Hills and John Wordin of West Hills--placed 14th in the men’s team time trials June 14.

In the men’s individual time trials June 12, Gustafson finished 54th with a time of 56:20.89, Hanson finished 73rd (57:37.74) and Nicolaides finished 102nd (59:14.21).

A notable absence in Altoona was Maureen Manley of Thousand Oaks, who was found to have multiple sclerosis in the fall of 1991.

In the 1991 World Championships, Manley finished fourth in the team time trial.

In last year’s National Championships, Manley won the team time trial, placed second in the road race and third in the individual time trial.
