Venice Art Walk Raises $500,000

Venice Family Clinic’s Venice Art Walk ‘92, held May 30-31 at the studios of local artists, attracted 4,200 guests and raised $500,000. Proceeds will provide health care to thousands who have no other access to quality care. Sheila Goldberg was chairwoman. Laura Maslon was publicity chairwoman.

Jewish Foundation for Christian Rescuers/Anti-Defamation League honored 81-year-old Sister Klara Jaroszynska and 90-year-old Brone Straupiene for saving the lives of Jews during World War II. The affair at the Beverly Hilton on June 11 raised $250,000 for the Anti-Defamation League. Also honored were Robert H. Ahmanson and Vidal Sassoon.

UCLA School of Medicine’s Operation Brainchild dinner-dance, held May 30 at the 385 Club, netted $30,000. In addition, the charity received a $20,000 gift from Sandy and Larry Bosley and a $20,000 donation from the J. W. and Ida M. Jameson Foundation. Operation Brainchild provides support for pediatric neurosurgery research. The gala, attended by 300 guests, was underwritten by Acapulco restaurants.

AIDS Project Los Angeles raised $80,000 at its L. A. Art Night for Life benefit May 8 at the Broadway Gallery complex in Santa Monica. APLA provides free programs to more than 3,400 people living with AIDS in Los Angeles County. The event was created by a committee of Santa Monica galleries that included Shea Bornstein, Robert Berman, Meyers/Bloom, Richard Green and Lowe Gallery. Sandra Bernhard hosted the event.

Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, USC, will receive more than $250,000, net proceeds from the May 16 Freeman Aces Cancer Tennis Tournament at the Beverly Hills Country Club. Larry Freeman, CEO and founder of Freeman Cosmetics Corp., hosts the annual event, which raises money for research.

KCRW Foundation received more than $74,000 at the June 21 “Summerday ‘92” annual fund-raiser, which featured wine-tasting and gourmet cuisine, along with the International Wine, Dine and Travel Auction. Major sponsors were American Airlines, Arco, Paradise Tropical Tea, Prebica Arabica Coffee and Somers Gin. Proceeds will purchase equipment for KCRW’s new radio drama studio.

National Parkinson Foundation held its second annual Celebrity Art and Memorabilia Auction June 7 at co-chairwoman, Phyllis Diller’s home in Brentwood. The outdoor event, with more than 500 items available for auction, raised $110,000. Teddi Winograd was chair. Henny Backus and Dick Clark were also co-chairs.

Motion Picture and Television Fund will receive $70,000 raised at the 14th Annual Heartbeat of Hollywood Golf Classic June 8 at Calabasas Golf and Country Club. Robert Stack was honorary chair at the classic attended by 250 golfers. Dinner guests numbered 400. Proceeds will help purchase medical and surgical equipment.
