Japanese Say U.S. Is Making Wrong Kinds of Chips: U.S. semiconductor makers must offer more of the chips that Japanese companies need before they can sell more in Japan, Japanese industry officials said. Nobuo Kanoi, chairman of a committee of foreign chip users in the Electronics Industries Assn. of Japan, said it will be difficult to increase U.S. chip purchases quickly because many of the semiconductors used by Japanese electronics companies are specialized. In recent years, more U.S. companies have been hired by Japanese electronics makers to custom-design chips for particular products, and sales of those chips are expected to begin rising as the products come to market.
