Mead to Cut 1,000 Positions: Mead Corp. said it will eliminate 1,000 jobs the next two to three years, set aside $95 million in the second quarter to pay for the reductions and sell an office products unit. The Dayton, Ohio, paper products company indicated that the actions may result in a second-quarter operating loss. Mead had estimated earnings at 70 cents per share before the special charges. Mead also said it agreed to sell its commercial office-products business, Ampad Corp., to Bain Capital, a Boston-based investment firm. It would not disclose the terms. Mead, which employs 21,000 nationwide, said the personnel cuts will save $60 million a year.
