DROPPING OARS: For almost 30 years, Dave Grant has been a familiar figure in Newport Harbor as coach of Orange Coast College’s crew team, leading it to a national reputation. But now Grant says he’s stepping down (C1). Reason: The last three years he has also been the college’s president, and state budget problems are making that a burdensome job. The crew job, though, was his passion. For years he did it without pay. . . . “I do it for the same reason the oarsmen do--it’s fun,” Grant says.
